• Elane's room was on the second floor not far from the stairs. The room had been purposely chosen so that, in case of emergency, she could quickly make her way to any location in the Keep. A torch was hanging on each side of the gleaming oak door.

Inside the spacious room stands a luxurious bed with a headboard, richly decorated with elvish carvings. A blood-red bedspread with gold fringes lays tightly over it.

The fireplace in the the wall opposite the bed is flanked on either side by a dragon with a look that makes you feel like you are being watched continuously. There are two comfortable chairs in dark red velvet standing by the fireplace, each with a small table next to it.

In one of the corners there is a small writing table. In the other corner, a curtain is hanging to keep the room behind it out of sight.

  • After her visit to the Kanzlerin, Elane walks up the stairs to her room, opens the door and enters. She pauses for a moment to think about how best to prepare for her visit to Tendal. Then her eye catches the poachers' bags she brought back from her journey to the Firemarch with Molly and her students.

She walks over to them and pulls an oil lamp from one of the bags fills it with oil and lights the wick. Then the fire dancer sets the lamp down on a ledge in front of the window.

"Lady Ignis, the great flame in the monastery may be extinguished, but this little flame symbolizes that fire and the fire in me that will never go out!"

With a determined look, Elane stares out the window. The view is megical beautiful of the lights that are lit one by one as darkness descends.

  • A soft knocking on the door disturbs Elanes thoughts. Through the wood the voice of a servant could be heard, somewhat muffled.

"M´Lady? I am sorry to disturb you, but you have a visitor. It is the Margr... the Knight of Ashes. Serr Balor."

  • Distracted by the soft knocking, Elane turns away from the window. A smile appears on her face when she hears who the servant is announcing.

She walks to the door and when she opens it, she looks straight into the eyes of the Knight of Ashes.

"Friends are always welcome, no matter the time of day. Balor, please come in and sit down."

Elane points to the chairs standing by the fireplace, where the flames of a friendly looking fire are dancing.

  • The servant who had brought Balor to Elanes chamber withdrew silently, as Balor stepped in and closed the door.

"Thank you, Elane", he said smiling. Balor remained standing at first and went to the window, looking out over the city.

"I had a view not so dissimilar from my room. Once." His voice was low, almost a whisper. "It seems a long time ago." Balor was wearing his torn tabbard with the Ignis symbol and a white shirt. Everything on him was grey and white, with little patches of red here and there. Finally he turned to the firedancer.

"I heard you plan to travel? Is it true?"

  • Elane stands behind Balor and looks at the clothes he is wearing. It is so much different, more humble than before, but she respects the reason he dresses the way he now does. The little red patches remind her of tiny smoldering embers.

In a soft voice she answers

"I'm sure there will come a time again when you will enjoy such a view. Of that I have no doubt."

When he turns around, she nods in response to his question.

"Yes, I am planning to go to the Firemarch and visit Tendal. I would like to know how he is doing, all alone in that castle in the Firemarch. And along the way I want to see how the people living there are faring and if they might need help. It must have been quite trumatic for them to see people with whom they lived in the same part of the country simply torn out of their lives, just like that."

  • Balor nodded.

"Traumatic. Yes, you are right, Elane. When I was following the path of shadows through the Fire March, it seemed like a land subdued. And the people appeared like ghosts to me." He smiled a little. "But maybe, that was just my eyes betraying me or my broken soul showing things, that were not really there."

The Ash Knight stepped over to the fire, stretching out his hands to the flames.

"It will be autumn soon. And winter after that. The cold is coming. How blessed we are to have the fire" he said, enjoying the warmth. "What has the Baron decided, regarding Tendal, do you know that?"
