• It was in the depth of winter, the ground in the north frozen hard and the water in the swamp glazed over with ice, that a letter reached the garison at the Emerald Tower. It was brought before the Captain of the keep, Ser Varek Aestus. The tower itself had grown over the last weeks and months, with a new wall and buildings being errected around the original tower. Come next summer, the fortress would be a proper keep and castle, with stronger and higher walls and more space for soldiers. But for now the work was stopped by the bitter cold, making tools and materials impossible to handle properly.

But in the chambers of the Captain, a cozy fire was burning, casting flickering light on the walls.

    The letter reads as follows:

On behalf of Castellan Ser Briceus of Thalgrund the militia of the whole Oldmarch has to be gathered. Every single capable man and woman has to appear at dawn in two weeks from now in front of the Dragon Keep. Spread the word and make haste.

It was signed by Briceus himself and was about four days old, when it reached the tower.

  • Varek read the letter twice to make sure he understood it properly.

"Mobilizing the militia.. in the winter? Without writing the cause or what to be armed for.."

Varek knitted his brow as he stared at the letter. Then he got up, letter still in hand, opened his door and called for one of the servants.

"Call the Commander and tell him to meet me at his earliest convenience."

As the servant hurried away, Varek returned to his chambers and made room to meet with the commander. Several books about Mitraspera and the realm of Roses in particular were moved away and a half empty bottle of whiskey as well as two glasses were placed on the table.

  • It was not long before Gorin Blackoak, commander of the troops, entered the chambers of Ser Varek. As always, the face of the old ranger was grim.

"You wanted to see me, Ser Varek?", he asked, his voice a little rough from the cold wind. Gorin was famous for touring the walkways of the tower himself, making sure, that all soldiers were alert and doing their duty.

  • "Yes Commander, have a seat and warm your throat. I have a letter from the Castellan and I would like to hear your thoughts on it's contents."

Varek gestured towards the table and whiskey, before he handed the letter to Gorin. Varek himself to the seat furthest from the door, his back towards the wall, and poured himself and the commander a Glass.

  • Gorin studied the letter at lenght, then read it again. Eventually he put it down on the table. He frowned.

"What is this? Calling the militia in the middle of the winter? Do we expect an attack?"

    He shook his head.

"This makes no sense to me. I would like to send a messenger to Drachenbrück, to find out what this is about. If we are expecting an attack ... well, we should know."

He took the letter again and gazed at some of the lines.

"The call does not effect us much here. So few people live in the north, that not many will go to Drachenbrück to be part of the assembled militia. This concerns more the villages along the river and south of the Thornwood, I would think."
